Doctoral Program Policies

The Doctoral Programs at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon have produced some of the world's leading Management Science faculty and research.

Study for the doctoral degree is organized around an initial set of courses in the core disciplines of Economics, Organization Behavior and Theory, and Operations Research. The foundational knowledge and methodologies that students in the doctoral program learn here form the basis for further study and research either in one of the core disciplines, or in one (or more) of the remaining functional areas of business: Accounting, Financial Economics, Information Systems, Marketing, or Operations Management & Manufacturing.

While each area has overall responsibility for setting its own requirements for the Ph.D., the full faculty imposes standards of excellence for the program as a whole. The responsibility for enforcing these standards lies with the Chairman of the Ph.D. Committee, who is appointed by the Dean.

The Tepper School of Business offers the Ph.D. degree in eight different areas:

The school also offers the Ph.D. degree jointly with other colleges in the University in the fields of Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization: (joint with Mathematics and Computer Science) Economics and Public Policy (joint with the Heinz School of Public Policy and Management) Management of Manufacturing and Automation (joint with the Robotics Institute), and Mathematical Finance (joint with Mathematics).

While the faculty in each of these areas has complete control and responsibility for their own part of the business school Ph.D. program, the full faculty views the various parts of the program as a coherent whole.
