Far and away the most popular of the Pittsburgh neighborhoods for Tepper School of Business students, Shadyside is located one mile from Carnegie Mellon University and four miles from downtown Pittsburgh. This cozy neighborhood was developed in the mid-19th century and named for its numerous shady lanes. Shadyside features stately Victorian mansions, modern condominiums and apartments, where both affluent families and young professionals make their homes alongside students from all over Pittsburgh.

Shadyside is a top Pittsburgh shopping destination, thanks to its concentration of retail stores and boutiques. The Walnut Street shopping district bustles with popular national stores, like Williams-Sonoma, the Apple Store, American Apparel and Banana Republic; high-end shops, including Weisshouse Design and Moda; and whimsical gift shops, like Kawaii Gifts and Kards Unlimited. The Ellsworth Avenue district features locally owned businesses, vintage stores (Hey Betty) and a collection of galleries (Gallerie Chiz, Mendelson Gallery) that reflect that area’s bustling artist population.

Both streets also offer a variety of restaurants (Girasole, Elbow Room, Soba) and coffee shops (Crazy MochaJitters Cafe), as well as two of the city’s gay bars: 5801 Video Lounge and SPIN. Visit the Shadyside Chamber of Commerce to find out more.

The neighborhood is also home to UPMC Shadyside and UPMC CancerCenters Hillman Cancer Center.
