
The courses listed below are approved for their requirement category, and they may serve as a guide for alternative Carnegie Mellon courses that also may be approved to fulfill a category. Please note the following breadth requirement policies:
Students who wish to fulfill a requirement with a course not listed below need approval from a UBA advisor.
REQUIREMENT CATEGORIES
1. History: 79-104 Global Histories (required during the first year)
To understand the world today and where it may be heading, it is crucial not only to think globally, but also to relate current global processes to comparable processes in the past. This requirement offers several options for expanding on the skills students need to think globally throgh the medium of history.
2. English: 76-101 Interpretation and Argument (required during the first year)
The requirement seeks to help students understand the requirements of advanced college-level writing. Students will build upon their composing knowledge by reflecting and thinking strategicially as they plan, write, and revise their own texts.
3. Science and Technology (one course required):
This requirement seeks to engage students in both exposure to substance, and the experience of methods in science and technology through courses drawn from the natural and physical sciences, computer science, and engineering. 4. Cognition, Choice and Behavior (one course required):
Courses in this requirement examine the process of individudal thinking, decision-making, and behavior from a variety of perspectives (e.g., psychology, decision science, lingistics, and philosophy) and through a model-based reasoning approach. 5. Political and Social Institutions (one course required):
This requirement presents courses that analyze, through model-based reasoning, the processes by which institutions organize individual preferences and actions into collective outcomes. Choices draw upon such disciplines as political science, history, and statistics. (Note: This list is not exhaustive; consult your advisor if you find an applicable course not listed below.)
6. Creative Production and Reflection (one course required):
These courses foster creativity and provide exposure to artistic and intellectual products such as drama, literature, design, music, expository writing, and foreign languages. It also seeks to stimulate critical reflection on the process of creating, and inquiry into why one chooses certain kinds of creative productions. Any language course in the Department of Modern Languages (82-xxx) will satisfy the Creative Production and Reflection Breadth Requirement. 7. Cultural Analysis (one course required):
This requirement fosters deeper understanding of the role cultures play in shaping individual and social behaviors. Any course in the Department of History (79-2xx or higher) or any cultural study course in the Department of Modern Languages will satisfy the Cultural Analysis Breadth Requirement.
