Friendship
Distance from Campus: 1.8 miles
Located 1.8 miles from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon and 3.3 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh is the small, residential neighborhood of Friendship. Founded in the late 1800s, Friendship may be best known as the home of the Western Pennsylvania Hospital.
Friendship’s wide, flat streets are flanked by striking, turn-of-the-century Victorian, Edwardian, and Arts and Crafts houses, many of which have been converted to apartments that still retain their original hardwood floors, stained glass windows, and ornamental woodwork. Residents enjoy a mix of on-street and private parking, as well as easy access to public transportation. Friendship is also within walking distance of the nearby neighborhoods of Shadyside and Bloomfield.
While homes dominate this tiny community, Friendship boasts two community parks (Friendship Park, Baum Grove) that are enjoyed by locals and their pets. Food is available at restaurants serving Vietnamese (Pho Minh), Italian (Calabria’s), and vegetarian/vegan (Quiet Storm) cuisine. And culture abounds at the six galleries located along Penn Avenue, including Penn Gallery and Modernformations.
