Student Life

Carnegie Mellon campus is located in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Compared to other major cities in the US, Pittsburgh is very affordable, livable and well connected to other major cities in the US. The city is consistently ranked high in livability surveys. In 2007, Pittsburgh was named "America's Most Livable City" by Places Rated Almanac; in 2009, Pittsburgh was named most livable city in the United States by The Economist. Furthermore, Pittsburgh hosted a G-20 Summit meeting on September 24 and 25, 2009.

In Pittsburgh you can enjoy multiple activities including sports and cultural events, outdoor activities and nightlife. Carnegie Mellon students can often be seen visiting Carnegie Museums, walking around Schenley Park, riding the incline up Mount Washington to enjoy one of the most spectacular city views in the US, sitting on the grass to watch the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, or simply gathering with friends to see a free outdoor movie on Flagstaff Hill during the summer.

Carnegie Mellon is located in the Oakland neighborhood, home to both Carnegie Mellon and the University of Pittsburgh, and a community rich with museums, libraries and entertainment and relatively cheap restaurant options available close to school. Carnegie Mellon is also surrounded by residential neighborhoods such as Squirrel Hill and Shadyside, where most of our graduate students choose to live. Most of these neighborhoods have relatively large communities of international students and families that enhance the living experience.

Given the size of the doctoral program, the academic community is very friendly and offers several opportunities to interact with your peers. For example, the doctoral program has weekly afternoon teas, a fantastic opportunity to chat about research and beyond with all faculty and students. The department itself and the Graduate Student Assembly also offer frequent opportunities to get involved in many events. Past events include discounted Steelers preseason games, free tickets to Pittsburgh Penguins games and musical concerts at Consol Energy Center, GSA Pirates nights, the PhD bowling party, CMU symphony night, and GSA wine tastings.
