Student teams from as far away as Egypt and India applied to participate in this year’s Tepper Venture Challenge, a business plan competition organized annually by the Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Association (UEA). This year, the event was sponsored by Meyer, Unkovic, & Scott and the Pittsburgh Venture Capital Association.
At the competition, Midnight Madness Distilling of CMU took first place with an innovative distilling process and Samambu of Illinois Institute of Technology placed second with abhadi™, a non-woven bamboo fiber mat that can drastically reduce the amount of plastic in everyday products.
A young UEA team - composed of one senior, Ben Pious, and five sophomores: Nick Gardiner, Sue Park, Melissa Dileo, Bryn Raschke, and William Gong - planned the Tepper Venture Challenge this year.
Gardiner reflected, “In the end we learned a lot of lessons that will really help us to improve the competition in future years as we work towards our goal of establishing the Tepper Venture Challenge as one of the elite business plan competitions in the world.”
