A hallmark of the FlexMBA online learning, on-site experience is the integrated model of flexibility and coursework that creates an academic experience rarely found among business schools. We treat our distance learning classrooms just as we would our campus classes by limiting size (approximately 20 per evening session), encouraging student and professor interaction and featuring team-based learning.
We have been conducting distance learning since 1996, so we understand the needs and expectations of students who choose an online masters degree format for their graduate school needs. With nearly 20 years of experience, the Tepper School is able to replicate the same high standards across MBA formats while working with online students to ensure an exceptional experience.
In order to get the most out of your investment, we suggest prospective FlexMBA students consider the following as you make your decision:
The FlexMBA experience facilitates your learning via robust technology. Because learning occurs both in real-time and independently, it will be necessary that you rely on the technology to keep organized and prepared for lectures, homework, team discussions, presentations and on-campus class sessions.
Classes will be held in two different formats, and successful students must embrace and participate in both:
Weekly Class (online)
Students enroll in two classes per mini-semester, and each of these classes is held one night per week, for a total of two evening classes per week. One class will be live and the other asynchronous (recorded) online. The instruction closely replicates a classroom experience – you will see your classmates and professors, and they will see you. Because independent study and the flexibility it provides is among the program’s advantages, we suggest students plan for 9 – 15 hours of study time outside of class time for working at your own pace on homework, team presentations and discussions, online chats, office hours and supplementary reading and video material.
Access Weekends (onsite)
Our Access Weekends are an important component of your studies. They occur approximately every two months (duration of 3 days over a Friday – Sunday timeframe) and rotating among Carnegie Mellon campus locations and cities featuring alumni chapter concentrations. These 3-day breaks combine in-person instruction alongside your classmates as well as career immersion workshops and programs with alumni.
The online learning experience is about more than the coursework. A benefit of joining an MBA community is building a network that will be critical to you throughout your career. As you participate in online courses or visit with our alumni, we encourage you to become involved in the Tepper School community. Although the realities of the online format cannot fully replicate an on-campus experience, the FlexMBA program is structured to provide access, career development, networking and collaboration at levels designed to accelerate your personal and professional life.
