Fatma Kilinc-Karzan Selected as 2012-13 Wimmer Faculty Fellow

PITTSBURGH— Fatma Kilinc-Karzan, Assistant Professor of Operations Research at the Tepper School of Business has been selected as a 2012-13 Wimmer Faculty Fellow along with 4 other outstanding junior faculty members at Carnegie Mellon University.. The honor was announced by University’s Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence . The 2012-13 winners include: Kilinc-Karzan, Aditya Khair, assistant professor of chemical engineering, Emma Brunskill, assistant professor, Computer Science Department, Karen Thickman, assistant teaching professor, Ray and Stephanie Lane Center for Computational Biology and Christopher Warren, assistant professor of English.
Wimmer Faculty Fellows are made possible by a grant from the Phillip H. Wimmer and Betty L. Wimmer Family Foundation. The awards are designed for junior faculty members and aimed at enhancing their teaching through concentrated work in designing or re-designing a course, innovating new materials or exploring a new pedagogical approach. Fellows work in close collaboration with Eberly Center colleagues and receive a stipend to acknowledge the work it takes to improve one's effectiveness as an educator.
Kilnic-Karzan plans to utilize the fellowship resources to redesign a course titled “Mathematical Models for Consulting”, offered at Tepper School of Business. This course introduces students to a wide variety of models and techniques used by consultants and decision-support software. It covers applications of linear and integer programming, fuzzy logic and fuzzy control, neural networks, constraint programming, Bayesian networks, influence diagrams, analytical hierarchy process and data envelopment analysis. This course is an elective course for business administration undergraduate students and also serves as an elective for the undergraduate Mathematics majors in Operations Research and Statistics concentrations.
The scope of her project will involve the design and development of new instructional materials such as large-scale assignments, case studies, and in-class exercises to support her new instructional strategy involving in-class examination and discussion of real-life applications and multi-purpose skill building group work.
