Things to Do in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh as a center for activity and entertainment may be one of the best kept secrets around. The city’s rugged terrain and natural beauty practically beg everyone who lives for outdoor adventure to hike, run, and bike its trails; ski its nearby slopes; kayak or float down its rivers; and tackle a few of the city’s 712 public stairways for a little vertical work out.

Pittsburgh’s wealthy industrialists and philanthropists helped to build a city that’s also a culture maven’s dream. For history lovers, there’s the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Senator John Heinz History Center, August Wilson Center for African American Culture, and Soldiers & Sailors National Military Museum. Art enthusiasts can enjoy modern and traditional works at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Andy Warhol Museum, Mattress Factory, Society for Contemporary Craft, and the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh. And performing arts aficionados can enjoy opera, the symphony, ballet, and musical theater.

The city’s working class roots also make a great place to enjoy some more laid-back activities. If you’re planning to stay in Pittsburgh for more than a day, you’ll need to become a fan of our six-time Super Bowl champion Steelers and defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins, take a trip to Kennywood Park, and kick back over an authentic German meal at Penn Brewery.

MY RECOMMENDATION: I like to go to Bloomfield Bridge Tavern for pierogies and kielbasa. It's kind of a hike but it's worth it for the delicious eats!... read more
