Shadyside
Distance from Campus: 1.0 mile
Offering upscale living with an urban-village feel, Shadyside is located 1 mile from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon and 4 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh. This cozy neighborhood was developed in the mid-19th century and named for its numerous shady lanes. Shadyside features older, stately Victorian mansions, modern condominiums, and apartments, and is home to affluent families, young professionals, and students.
Shadyside is a top Pittsburgh shopping destination, thanks to its concentration of high-end retail stores and boutiques. The Walnut Avenue shopping district bustles with popular national stores, like Williams-Sonoma, United Colors of Benetton, and Banana Republic, and high-end shops, like Weisshouse Design and Moda. The Ellsworth Avenue district features locally owned businesses, vintage stores (Hey Betty), and a collection of galleries (Gallerie Chiz, Mendelson Gallery) that reflect that area’s bustling artist population. Both streets also offer a variety of restaurants (Girasole, Pangea) and coffee shops (Crazy Mocha, Jitters Cafe), as well as two of the city’s gay bars: 5801 Video Lounge and SPIN.
Shadyside is home to two of the city’s most prestigious private schools. The Winchester Thurston School is a co-educational academy for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The Ellis School is an all-girls institution that also serves students in PreK-12. The neighborhood is also home to UPMC Shadyside Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
