Tepper subscribes to the "Global" and "Compustat North America" datasets. Descriptions of these data appear below. Main access is through WRDS and is limited to Tepper faculty and PhD students. Faculty may request limited-term course accounts, thereby allowing for Masters and Undergrad access. Tepper is also licensed to access COMPUSTAT directly (via CDROM). Interested users should contact the Tepper Computing Group ((412) 268-5881, Tepperhd@andrew.cmu.edu)).
Tepper's access is for a subset of the universe of COMPUSTAT data. For explicit details, first log-in to WRDS and then go here.
Note: The following data descriptions have been taken, verbatim, from http://wrds.wharton.upenn.edu/ds/emdb/index.shtml in 2007. Please see WRDS for more up-to-date information.
Compustat Global provides authoritative financial and market data covering publicly traded companies in more than 80 countries, representing over 90% of the world's market capitalization, including coverage of over 96% of European market capitalization and 88% of Asian market capitalization. Hundreds of data items, ratios and concepts and up to 12 years of annual history is included.
International data sets have been designed to reflect the varieties of actual reporting practices used across the globe, while allowing for minimal normalization and establishing consistency on an item by item basis for Ex-North American companies. Data sourcing through alliances with two leading, local information providers in Asia-Pacific enhances Compustat coverage in this region demonstrating accurate accounting interpretation and expediency.
Compustat Global consists of four distinct files: Industrial/Commercial; Financial Services; Issue; and Currency. The Currency File contains monthend and average translation rate items and cross-rate tables for designated currencies. The Compustat Global Financial Service file covers financial companies and contains data for Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Flow of Funds, and supplemental data items. The Compustat Global Industrial/Commercial contains data for Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Flow of Funds, and supplemental data items. The Compustat Global Issues file contains stock market related items, including monthly prices, dividends, shares traded, issued capital, and earnings per share.
Compustat North America
Compustat North America is a database of U.S. and Canadian fundamental and market information on more than 24,000 active and inactive publicly held companies. It provides more than 300 annual and 100 quarterly Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Statement of Cash Flows, and supplemental data items.
Standard & Poor's offers a selection of Compustat North America files that are available in both annual and quarterly formats. The industrial annual formats offer both historical and restated data. The industrial quarterly formats offer restated data as reported by the company. The restated data allows analysts to compare current and prior years' results on a comparable basis and determine financial trends and growth rates. For most companies, annual and quarterly data is available for a maximum of 20 years and 48 quarters (Compustat User's Guide, p.1).
Compustat North America files also contain information on aggregates, industry segments, banks, market prices, dividends, and earnings. For more detailed information on the Compustat files, consult the Compustat User's Guide.
WRDS offers access to Compustat North American data through the Compustat FTP file dataset. Many Universities subscribe to Standard & Poor's Research InsightSM and Standard & Poor's Market Insight through the Library or Business School. See the links below for more on Research Insight and Market Insight, and contact your Library or School of Business to determine whether you have access to additional data using these options.
