The "right" time to pursue the MBA varies by individual

Why is the admissions team interested in professional experience?  As a Tepper School MBA, you learn as much from your colleagues as you do from your professors. You contribute to this lateral learning by sharing your personal and professional experience in class discussions, group projects, and club activities.

Does this mean you have to have significant professional experience to apply?  No. We recognize that the contributions you can make to the Tepper School community come in a variety of shapes and sizes. We seek diversity in all dimensions and welcome applications from exceptionally talented and motivated individuals who may not yet have significant experience.

We encourage you to use our class profile as a reference, but suggest that you focus on the ranges rather than only the averages. One simple way to look at this is that half of our students have less experience than the median.  

Applying with fewer years of experience

When reviewing your application for your potential for professional success, the admissions committee is more interested in the quality of your experience rather than the quantity. Think about the impact you've already had on your organization, whether you've led a team, a project, or an initiative. Be prepared to share examples of your teamwork and leadership experiences.

Applying directly after college or university

Each year, there are successful Tepper School MBA applicants who apply directly after graduating from college or university. Because you are applying without significant professional experience, the admissions committee will review your application for strengths in other areas: relevant internship experience, strong academics, mature communication, and clearly defined goals. Think about the ways you can contribute to the Tepper School community. Demonstrate why now is the appropriate time for you to pursue your MBA.
