Year Two Capstone Experience

We recognize the increased value in developing executives that can fully understand the organization as a holistic entity and feature integrative, applied experiences via Capstone projects and courses. The Tepper MBA Capstones culminate with consultative projects that require you to apply the academic (knowledge) and co-curricular (leadership) skills you’ve gained throughout the program.

The pace and intensity of the MBA experience makes it difficult to appreciate the incremental skills and knowledge you are gaining, and the Capstone experience brings together the continuum of experiences and learning. From your early exposure to integrated views of business during BaseCamp orientation to your global Treks to your Accelerate Leadership Immersion , every experience is a valued step toward your career goals. It’s during your Capstone in which the “sum of your MBA parts” will be on full display!

The Capstone offerings take many forms, and we encourage students to tailor the experience to advance personal skill development and career goals, with choice areas including international business, management game, and MBA projects. Each Capstone will culminate with a presentation to project constituents/corporations.

The Management Game

The Management Game is an applied strategic management and general management exercise where teams of students operate computer simulated companies for 3 years acting as the executive committee of a multi-national manufacturing company. Groups of students compete against each other as they try to add value to their companies. Teaching competitive dynamics, group management skills, cross-functional management and presentation skills, this class is placed at the end of the year two curriculum and is intended to illustrate how to apply the tools acquired in other classes in a complex international business environment.

Managing Enterprises Of The Future

This innovative project course is offered in partnership with A.T. Kearney and select sponsoring companies to sensitize students to the real world challenges of the multi-dimensional and complex issues managers face today in both large and mid-size firms. In a sense, the engagements in the course simulate an executive assignment in a business lab like environment with real client teams, real problems and real data. Students are assigned to teams with each team being assigned to one consulting project in a company. In previous years, we have worked with firms including Siemens, Kaiser, Walmart, GSK, MeadvestVaco, Emerson, and Yahoo.

The tasks that teams undertake span several key business areas taught at Tepper including:

  • Operations, supply chain, and manufacturing
  • Marketing, customer relationships, and positioning for value products and services
  • Organizational behavior
  • Information systems technology
  • Strategy, competition and environmental Issues
  • Management of organizations and culture

Partnering with leading firms provides students with a unique opportunity to learn from the coaching and mentoring by interacting with mangers and partners dealing with similar engagements. The course concludes with a final presentation, in which each team presents their respective recommendations to senior management at the partnering firms and ATK.

The Capstone week brings together the continuum of experiences and learning.
