Advanced Placement (AP) / International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit
Minimum Grade Standard in Economics
Each year, each individual department at Carneige Mellon review sthe content of AP/IB classes and exams. Carnegie Mellon course credit is then determined based on these evaluations.
The University-wide AP policy for 2009-2010 AY awards nine (9) units of 73-100 (Principles of Economics) to students who earn a 5 (five) on either the AP Microeconomics or the AP Macroeconomics exam. Students who earn 5s (fives) on both the AP Microeconomics and the AP Macroeconomics exam receive nine (9) units of 73-100 credit. AP Economics scores of less than 5 (five) are awarded no credit.
The University-wide IB policy for 2009-2010 AY awards nine (9) units of 73-100 (Principles of Economics) to students who earn a 7 (seven) on the IB Economics Exam. IB Economics scores of less than 7 (seven) are awarded no credit.
N.B. Although the units will transfer for the courses you take, the grades will not be factored into your Carnegie Mellon University QPA.
All prerequisite courses for any economics course shall be completed with a grade of “C” or better in order for a student to be eligible to take the course.
Implementation of this policy will begin with enrollment in Spring 2008 courses. Students who fail to receive a grade of “C” or better in a prerequisite will be dropped or not permitted to enroll in the associated economics course. However, students who received a “D” in a prerequisite course in Spring 2007 term or earlier may petition for a waiver of this policy and to be enrolled in the course.
Current students must petition for transfer credit approval before attending taking classes at another institution. In order to petition for transfer credit, the following documentation will be needed:
Should the petition be approved, it is incumbent on the student to provide the University's Enrollment Services with an official transcript that indicates that the student earned a "C" or better. Students must earn a "B" or better to transfer credit for courses that serve as pre-requisites to other Economics courses.
All transfer requests must be made through the online transfer credit application site. Transfer Credit for 73-xxx courses may only be granted by the Undergraduate Economics Program. Students are responsible for completing the necessary transfer credit forms for their home colleges.
Students may transfer a maximum of two courses (including AP, IB, summer study abroad, etc. credits) towards any degree in Economics. This rule does not apply to study abroad courses taken during the Fall or Spring terms.
N.B. Although the units will transfer for the courses you take, the grades will not be factored into your Carnegie Mellon University QPA.
