PITTSBURGH— Allan Meltzer, The Allan H. Meltzer University Professor of Political Economy at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business has been awarded the 2009 Distinguished Teacher Award by the Mensa Education and Research Foundation. The award is in recognition of Professor Meltzer’s work as teacher and mentor that has had a significant and positive influence toward the educational growth and life of a Mensa member(s).
Robert Beatty, a 1960 graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in Industrial Management, nominated Professor Meltzer for the award in appreciation of the education, mentorship, and guidance that he received as a student. Beatty credits Professor Meltzer with introducing him to the utilization of computerized calculations for economics and encouraging him to study the (then) new field of computer programming and technology at Carnegie Mellon.
With guidance and instruction from Professor Meltzer, Beatty went on to a very successful career- which included serving as the original systems designer for NASDAQ, the (then) new electronic stock market, where he developed the algorithms that calculate NASDAQ quotes and the NASDAQ index.
Allan Meltzer continues to teach Capitalism at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, where he joined as an instructor in 1957. His successful career and celebrated contributions to the academic community, world monetary institutions, and national governments is joined by the educational enrichment and positive influence he has provided for thousands of students.
“Professor Meltzer was a wonderful teacher and mentor,” said Beatty. “To this day whenever I see his name in print, or see him being interviewed on a major TV show, I feel touch of pride that this is the man who is responsible for my career, and who has so influenced my life.”
Mr. Beatty presented the award to Professor Meltzer at a reception held at the Tepper School of Business.
