'Active Access' - New York City Alumni Chapter

New York alumni flashTimes Square, the Empire State Building and the Guggenheim aside, Tepper grads will find yet another impressive attraction located in The Big Apple—the second largest community of Carnegie Mellon and Tepper School alumni in the world. The New York Metro Chapter and the school’s industry-specific Wall Street chapter together boast a membership of more than 6,800.

The New York alumni chapter gives Tepper grads the opportunity to rub elbows and make business connections with classmates who are working in fields from investment banking to pharmaceutical to marketing. Year-round events include networking receptions, leadership dinners, seminars and regular panel discussions with faculty and senior alumni, and even get-togethers that are simply social.

“The Metro Chapter’s calendar of events is geared toward a broad audience, while the Wall Street group’s programming offers a more specialized focus for alumni working in financial services and investment banking,” says Ridgeback Capital’s Jeffrey Meckler (MSIA ’90), past president of the Metro Chapter. Last year, the New York Metro Chapter hosted events such as the “Business of Entertainment,” featuring prominent alums from Fox News, Time Warner and Marvel Entertainment who shared their insights on the challenges and opportunities facing the entertainment industry in the digital age.

Another popular event featured Marketing Professor Peter Boatwright as he joined a panel of senior alumni addressing brand marketing hosted by Carnegie Mellon alumnus Gary Singer (BS/H&SS '76), Chief Strategy Officer at Interbrand Corporation. “Our events are highly attended,” says Meckler. “At almost every one you’ll run into alums from the 70s, 80s, 90s and the new century.”

Jim Ostry (MSIA ’94), managing director at Credit-Suisse and current president of the Wall Street alumni group, was one of the founding members of the city’s financially focused affinity chapter. “Over the years, we’ve developed a tight network of alums who have made it on Wall Street and are eager to help their classmates find or switch jobs, knowing how hard it was themselves.”

“We aim for a minimum of one Wall Street event each quarter. We’ve held receptions with Dean Kenneth Dunn and Professor Chester Spatt. Plus, each fall we host current students who travel to New York for a two-day Career and Networking Event in the Financial District.”

Tepper alums can expand their business networks far beyond Tepper-specific events as well. Both groups are invited to participate in events organized by other regional business school alumni chapters through their association with the New York Business Schools Club (NYBSC). The club brings together all the New York-based business school alumni clubs to provide a forum for members to share programming, collaborate on events and share best practices on events and club administration. During the year, about 200 events are shared among the members of the NYBSC, ranging from multi-day seminars to evening wine tastings.

“We offer content-rich programs, but sometimes we get together just for fun,” says Metro’s Meckler. “Every year, I host a backyard barbecue so summer interns can meet alumni in the New York area. It’s important to connect outside the business setting, too. Often, the conversations go beyond career topics to include things from where to get a good pizza to issues on raising a family in New York City. ”
