Linda Argote delivered keynote speech for INSEAD Ph.D. diploma ceremony

Linda ArgoteOn June 30, Linda Argote, director of the Center of Organizational Learning, Innovation and Knowledge and David M. Kirr and Barbara A. Kirr Professor of Organizational Behavior and Theory presented the keynote speech for prestigious French business school INSEAD’s Ph.D. diploma ceremony.

Held in the Chateau de Fontainebleau, Argote’s speech emphasized the importance of conducting research to improve the world and solve pressing problems facing business and society. She also encouraged the graduates to use their data-analytic skills to find real and not “alternative” facts.

“If you think the problem is important and believe in what you are doing, you will be able to convince others of its importance,” Argote said in her speech.

“The graduation was a wonderful event. With graduates joining excellent universities such as Columbia, the University of Toronto, the University of Virginia, the University of Maryland and our own Carnegie Mellon, the mood was very upbeat,” Argote said.

Located outside of Paris, France, INSEAD is one of the leading business universities in the world. INSEAD’s MBA program ranked first globally in 2016 and 2017 in the Financial Timesglobal MBA ranking. Founded in 1957, INSEAD is an acronym for Institut Européen d'Administration des Affaires, which translates to “European Institute of Business Administration.” INSEAD offers Ph.D. programs in accounting, decision sciences, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, organizational behavior, strategy, and technology and operations management. INSEAD has additional campuses in Singapore and Abu Dhabi.

“The Tepper School has a diverse group of faculty with international reputations for path-breaking research and intellectual leadership. It’s an honor to have a pioneering researcher like Linda honored by one of the best business schools in Europe,” Dean Robert Dammon said. “We’re thrilled to have one of our Tepper School faculty members represented in such a prestigious setting.”

In addition to presenting at the diploma ceremony, Argote participated in a review of INSEAD’s Ph.D. program, a relatively new program which began in the 1990s.

“The faculty at INSEAD are very committed to the program and have established a very strong program that places students in excellent universities around the world,” Argote said. “Their program is similar to ours in its interdisciplinary orientation.”

Argote’s research focuses on organizational learning, knowledge transfer and transactive memory systems (team members’ knowledge of each other’s expertise).

As director of the Center of Organizational Learning, Innovation and Knowledge, Argote promotes projects from researchers in a variety of disciplines, including organizational behavior, information systems, business technologies, engineering, economics and strategy. The goal of the research is to increase understanding of factors affecting the ability of organizations to learn and to retain and transfer knowledge, capabilities that are critical to organizational success. The center also supports conferences in which researchers share new findings.

Linda began her career at Tepper School in 1979 — after finishing her Ph.D. in organizational psychology at the University of Michigan — as an assistant professor. She has held the titles associate professor, professor, Carnegie Bosch Professor and, since 1997, David M. Kirr and Barbara A. Kirr Professor of Organizational Behavior and Theory.
