Course Description

One of the main features of today’s business world is the ubiquitous use of technology: we would like to derive insights from numerous sources of data and add value by proposing best-fitting, cutting-edge courses of action, which are implementable in practice. This results in extremely complex business problems, understanding the problem, finding a solution and selecting among various possible alternatives can all be difficult. Often used by internal or external consultants, Operations research offers a set of tools to aid these difficult managerial decisions and provide significant competitive advantage. Building on the basic methods from the course Optimization and Decision Making, we will closely examine some of the most successful recent applications of these methodologies in several business areas such as operations, marketing, finance, with the primary goal of understanding the underlying models and methods to allow generalization to other contexts.  (7/2013)
