This course covers a wide variety of mathematical models and techniques used by consultants and which lie at the heart of much decision-support software. Building on the basic methods from the operations research courses, we will discuss the benefits and limitations of different modeling and solving techniques, e.g., linear, integer and stochastic models, to strategic, tactical and operational level decision making, and examine the most successful recent work from real life applications in detail. While doing so, we will follow primarily a practical spreadsheet-based approach to provide hands-on experience with software such as Excel Solver. Prerequisites: 21-257 or 21-292 or permission of the instructor.
