As a member of the Tepper School of Business family, you are a part of an online community that spans the globe. Whether you are a Tepper School alumnus or student, you have a gateway to thousands of fellow Compass members. Interested in networking, sharing a business idea or exploring career opportunities? The Compass site has impressive features that allow you to customize your online networking experience to ensure that you have access to up-to-date chapter events and news.

Below are some helpful tips to what’s available in Compass:

Compass Log-In

The log-in uses your email address of record and the password you selected. If you have forgotten your password, click on the “Forgot Password” link on the log in screen. An email will be sent to you with instructions to set your password.

Update My Profile

You can update all the pertinent information in your record. The various tabs will take you to the different sections of your record:

  • Name - check to make sure we have your name listed correctly and add your preferred nick name.
  • Address - listing of home, work and summer address information.
  • Email/Phone – listing of home and work phone numbers and fax numbers and home and work email addresses. All of these can be shown to others or hidden.
  • Employment – Add current employment information or past information. Remember to add start and end dates.
  • Affiliations – In this section, please choose your chapter associations. You are not limited to the number you can associate with and this can be updated at anytime. If you frequently travel to an area, you might want to receive event information through associating with that local chapter too. Add your personal interests. Information about degrees received at institutions other than Carnegie Mellon can be entered here.
  • Military – add your military group association.
  • Change Password – update your personal password.

Search the Directory

Searching Compass can be done by People or Company

  • People Search – can be done by name, chapter or advance search parameters. Once you've found the person you're looking for, you can add him to your personal list of contacts.  You can add him from either the search results page or his quick profile page.
  • Company Search – can be done by name, location, industry or networking.
  • To further refine the company name search, you can show only the Career Opportunities targeted companies, ones they are actively reaching out to for recruiting by clicking the box under “Select a Company”.


  • Chapter Links – lists all the Tepper Alumni Chapters, domestic and international, and Special Affinity Groups with links to their web pages.
  • My Class Notes – this is where you can Add a Class Note as well as view all that you have submitted. Notes marked with an '*' are not approved yet. These notes will not be visible to other people until they are approved. Once you have entered a note, you will not be able to edit it.

My Contacts

This is the list of the contacts which you have selected to add to your list. You can add or delete contacts at any time. When you add/remove a contact to/from your list, the person is not notified of this process. From a person’s profile, you can also send an email to him if permitted.

My Photos

Each person can upload up to 5 JPG, JPEG, or GIF files. (Maximum size of 3MB). All photos are subject to the approval of the Alumni Relations Staff for appropriateness. Once a photo is approved, you can set it as your profile photo. Photos can be deleted by you at any time.

My Preferences

Set your preference for receiving:

  • Alumni communications including event notification, receiving  e-Newsletter and willingness to network with Tepper School students and alumni for career opportunities.
  • Career Opportunities Center - receive COC e-Newsletter or become a student mentor.
  • Admissions Support  – your willingness to be an admissions volunteer.
